Pegasus Ambassador 6147

Forever Home

Pegasus Ambassador 6147 (now Tally) was matched to her forever home on July 4, 2021. Katy Bradford of Tennessee is the proud new owner. Katy shared with us, “It’s amazing. I’m so grateful to have her. I think you are doing it the smartest way. So many people take on too many and can’t ever make progress. This way, each horse can find a wonderful match.” Thank you, Katy, for being our wonderful match.

Gather & Selection

Gathered from Devil’s Garden, which is located in the Modoc National Forest just outside Alturas, California, Pegasus Mustang Ambassador 6147 (P47) was selected by Terry Flanagan and Taylor Randall Schewbke in January of 2021. We selected P47 from hundreds of available horses due to several factors: her height (15.1), her movement (a 10 second video revealed a lovely walk and trot), and her body type (she appeared to be well balanced and proportionally correct). In addition, while many horses appear frightened in their Forest Service or BLM videos, P47 seemed rather calm, which was for us just another indicator of a successful ambassador to lead our project.

Training Benchmarks

In early February, P47 was transported from California to Taylor’s Rancho del Comienzo where her training was initiated right away. From the start, Taylor wanted P47 to associate her with food, so Taylor spent many hours in the vicinity of the new arrival patiently just “being” in her presence while she ate.

From there, Taylor’s training benchmarks with P47 included:

  • Mid Feb – brushing out mane and currying entire body

  • Early March – haltering, giving to the halter, leading, touching down entire legs, disengaging hindquarters

  • Mid March – picking up all four feet, ponying

  • Late March – first saddling, trailer loading, stepping into stirrups

  • Early April – first riding, including walking and trotting

  • Mid April – first cantering and feet trimming

  • Mid May – trailering off property and riding at another location

  • Late May – trailering off property and riding in an indoor arena

  • Mid June – being ridden by a 15-year-old amateur student

  • Mid June – ready for sale! P47 is light off the leg, has 3 comfortable gaits, gets along well with other horses, rides in an arena or trail, is at ease in new situations, rides English, Western and bareback, stands well for grooming, farrier and bathing, and loads in and out of a trailer

  • Early July - sold
